Summer Tips for Your Pets
We all love and care for our fur kids, they bring us so much joy and happiness! As we all know, keeping pets comfortable and safe during the summer is really important. Here are some great tips to help you care for your pets during the hotter months:
1. Hydration is Key
Fresh Water: Always provide plenty of fresh, cool water. Consider using ice cubes to keep the water cool longer.
Portable Water Bowl: If you’re going out with your pet, bring a portable water bowl to keep them hydrated. If you are taking your dogs out for long walks or hikes, make sure you have enough water for both of you!
2. Avoid Overheating
Limit Outdoor Activity: Walk dogs early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler. Avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours and especially on those hot sunny days where there is no cloud cover.
Cool Down: Use cooling mats, or wet towels for your pet to lie on, or let them play in a shallow pool.
Never Ever Ever Leave Pets in Cars: Even with windows cracked, the temperature inside a car can rise dangerously high within minutes.
3. Protect Their Paws
Check Pavement Temperature: Pavement can get extremely hot and burn your pet’s paws. Check with your hand; if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.
Dog Booties: Consider using dog booties to protect their paws from hot surfaces.
4. Prevent Sunburn
Use Pet Sunscreen: Pets with thin coats, light-colored fur, or exposed skin areas are more susceptible to sunburn. Use a pet-safe sunscreen, especially on sensitive areas like the nose and ears.
Shade: Ensure your pet has access to shade at all times when outside.
5. Keep Up with Grooming
Regular Brushing: Regular grooming helps to remove excess fur and prevents mats, which can trap heat.
Avoid Shaving: Don’t shave your pet’s coat too short, as their fur protects them from sunburn and heat.
6. Be Aware of Signs of Heatstroke
Know the Symptoms: Signs include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and collapse. If you notice these symptoms, cool your pet down gradually and seek veterinary care immediately.
7. Beware of Insects
Flea and Tick Prevention: Summer is peak season for fleas and ticks. Keep your pet on a regular prevention regimen.
Check for Bites: After spending time outdoors, check your pet for any signs of insect bites or ticks. Carefully check over their bodies, those ticks can be hard to find so make sure you thoroughly check them over.
8. Watch Out for Toxic Plants
Avoid Toxic Plants: Some plants, like lilies and azaleas, are toxic to pets. Make sure your garden is pet-safe.
9. Provide Indoor Entertainment
Mental Stimulation: When it’s too hot to go outside, provide toys, puzzles, or games to keep your pet entertained indoors.
10. Plan Ahead for Trips
Pet-Friendly Accommodations: If traveling, ensure your accommodations are pet-friendly and that your pet is comfortable with the journey.
These tips should help keep your pets healthy and happy throughout the summer!
